Our seed

The British countryside was once full of meadows bursting with a variety of flowering plants, supporting butterflies, insects, farmland birds and other wildlife. However, since the 1930s we have lost over 97% of what are called ‘unimproved grasslands’.

However at Sow Wild we know wildflower gardens and meadows are something you can easily create yourself, and working alongside Agrifactors we have helped to decrease this percentage in the Weald to 80% – by introducing our local provenance Weald Native Origin Seed harvested within the Weald at our yard in Heathfield, to meadows created by landowners in the Weald.

Harvesting wildflowers is not straight forward, at Sow Wild we have a consulting botanist who regularly visits fields that we hope to harvest from, starting in mid-February up to the day before harvest. She looks and records all the different species on site, understands how to organically control weeds and will hand-harvest species where appropriate (for example, betony or pignut). As the year rolls on, she will estimate the possible yield and the days we can harvest the site. We are lucky that receptor sites are always available and we have 110 to choose from. We recently supplied local provenance seeds for 250 acres of new meadows, and this is set to double with the increasing popularity of wildflowers meadows.

At Sow Wild we also have our own on-site grass and seed mixing facility where we continue to mix our own tried and tested products. Our bee-friendly wildflower seed mixes are designed to flourish in a wide range of settings, however if you’re not quite sure which type of mix you need for the job at hand, why not give us a call or drop in for some friendly expert advice and guidance. We’ll be happy to help.
